Jon is an SAFD Certified Teacher and Advanced Actor Combatant and has been a member of the SAFD since 2001.

Jon is an avid martial artist, and currently trains in Danzan Ryu Jujitsu, Shinshin Toitsu Aikido, Kodokan Judo and Shotokan Karate concurrently at the Salem Budokai. He holds a black belt in Danzan Ryu Jujitsu and a brown belt in Shinshin Toitsu Aikido. He holds intermediate rank in Shingu Aikido, Zen Judo and Kodokan Judo. He has cross trained in Kosho Ryu Kenpo, Kung Fu, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Arnis, Jodo, Tanto Jitsu, Hojo Jitsu, Aikiken, Aikibo and western wrestling and boxing. He has experience as a practical shooting competitor (USPSA) and has studied tactical handgun strategy and technique. He recently began training in Bram Frank’s Modular Knife system, and has completed basic defensive knife and extreme close quarters handgun training with CSSDSC founder Bram Frank and CSSDSC instructor Greg Beeman. He has also garnered close quarters combatives and in-extremis knife experience with internationally known Defensive Tactics instructor Craig Douglas (aka SouthNarc) of ShivWorks.

Jonathan holds bachelor's degrees in Theatre and in Music; a master's degree in Acting Pedagogy and a Ph.D. in Directing Pedagogy. He is the Associate Department Chair at Willamette University in Salem, Oregon, where he serves as Associate Professor and head of the Directing program. Jonathan regularly teaches Directing, Theatre History, Introductory Acting and Stage Combat.

He is a member of the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers, and has choreographed violence for over thirty productions at universities and professional theatres throughout the midwest and northwest. His most recent choreography credits include Shoebox Shakespeare and Marisol at Willamette University, The Illusion at Western Washington University and Burn This at Profile Theatre in Portland.
